Room-and-Pillar Mining Method | SpringerLink
Room-and-pillar mining is an open stope mining method that uses surrounding rocks and regular continuous pillars or rib pillars to maintain stope stability in the process of room stoping. The long-axis direction of the stoping room in the mining system can be arranged along the strike or dip, and the rooms and pillars are arranged …

Factsheet on: What is Gypsum?
Gypsum, but is comparatively limited in its technical applications. The content of Gypsum in sedimentary rock varies from 75% to 95%, the rest being clay and chalk. B. Extracting Natural Gypsum Gypsum/Anhydrite are produced from open-cast mines, or underground mines using pillar and stall mining methods, that give extraction rates of up to 75%.

The mine was worked using the pillar and stall method and employed 40 to 60 people. The mine is now owned by British Gypsum, and although gypsum production ceased in 1989, it still (in 2008) produces anhydrite for use in cement manufacture. This photograph is from the collections of Tutbury Museum.

Gypsum Mines
The mines today are extensive, with pillar and stall operations on a scale several times larger than the 6ft x 7ft tunnels made in earlier years. The modern miners travel to their working places underground by Landrover and the newly-blasted gypsum is extracted using enormous scraper-loader machines, crushing plant and conveyor belts.
