Lightweight expanded clay aggregate properties based on laboratory
The weight density of the grain and the aggregate, water absorption, deformability or resistance to shear are studied based on an extensive set of tests carried out in the Laboratorio de Geotecnia of CEDEX in Madrid (Spain). Among other tests, the dimension and dry weight density of more than 1500 grains has been determined.

The purpose of this test is to assess the amount of water that an aggregate can absorb. The water absorption capacity of aggregates plays a vital role in the design of concrete mixtures. If the aggregates absorb excess water, it can lead to a decrease in the workability of concrete, increase in drying shrinkage, and decrease in the strength and ...

The water absorption for the two series of concrete is shown in Table 5 and Fig. 2. It can be seen in the table that the water absorption, for both series, increases as the W/C ratio increases. The maximum absorption was observed at W/C ratio of 0.55. As the W/C ratio becomes larger than 0.55, water absorption decreases.
